ITV News reporter Gary Burgess is reported to have passed away at the age of 46, after a long battle with Cancer.

Gary was born on 13 November 1975 in Manchester, England. He was best known for being a British broadcaster and also a journalist, notably in the Channel Islands.

Burgess’ family moved to South Africa when Gary was six years old. His love for the media industry began at his high school radio station MHR.

He went on to start his broadcasting career in 1992 making cups of tea at Radio Wave 96.5. This was in his hometown, Blackpool.

He also worked at Warrington’s Wire FM, Q96 in Renfrewshire, and also for  UTV’s radio stations in the north of England.

Gary’s first job for the Channel Islands was in Guernsey.

He worked at Island FM in the early 2000s and would return some years later to present the Sunday phone-in on BBC Radio Guernsey.

Burgess made the move to ITV Channel TV’s Guernsey office in 2011. AT this time he relocated to Jersey with his partner.

He was also a  finalist in the Royal Television Society Southern Awards 2021.

In doing so, they became the first same-sex couple in Jersey to convert a civil partnership to marriage after the island legalized same-sex marriage.

They had held an unofficial wedding ceremony in March the same year before the law came into effect.

Gary was diagnosed with terminal cancer in November 2020. He went on to announce his retirement from broadcasting in August 2021 to focus on his health and wellbeing.

However, this was not the first time Burgess faced the known “demon disease” Cancer. He was first diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1999.

He was treated with chemotherapy and had two tumors removed, one in 2015 and the other in 2016.  Gary bravely told how his cancer was terminal and had just six to 12 months to live after tumors between his heart and lungs spread.

Gary however passed away on 1 January 2022.

Writing on his blog, the journalist said: “It immediately washed over me like the most overwhelming sea of guilt to think that my husband is likely going to be alone at home without me.

Gary Burgess has passed away.

“Having to ring your dad to tell him you’re going to die is horrible. Then your brother, Then a friend, Then another friend and Then your boss. Each call is utterly exhausting.”

TRIBUTES.

Gary’s husband, Alan revealed the news of the reporter’s death in a tribute to NHS workers who helped him and his husband get through the final weeks.

He said: “Through his career in journalism and broadcasting, Gary would have seen every variation of words describing someone’s strength and bravery, their wit and humor, their kindness and generosity, their stubbornness and determination, their sense of mischief and their joy in life’s simple pleasures.

“So, in an attempt to avoid cliché, I am just going to misquote a line of dialogue from the final episode of The West Wing, being one of Gary’s favorite programs and something said with love and pride by one spouse to the other.
