A person is barricaded in the area of Main Street near Cherry Hill Road in Branford and where shots were fired, according to police. There are road closures and some residents are being evacuated.
State police said they are assisting Branford Police.
The gunman is barricaded inside a hair salon, with a view of the shopping plaza, where customers are taking cover. They say the gunman fired towards the plaza and towards police, and a neighbor described hearing rapid gunfire.
Witnesses saw people running in the street, and the police are urging everyone in the area to take cover.
Parts of Route 1 and Main Street are shut down and Interstate 95 is closed at 53. State police said anyone who was planning on traveling in or around the vicinity should use alternate routes and avoid the area.
Route 1 North is closed at Short Beach. Southbound traffic on Route 1 is moving north of the area that police have responded to.
