Roberto Víctor Gerlein Echeverría was born on 18 November 1938, Barranquilla, Colombia. He is reported to have passed away on 23 December 2021 at the age of 83.

He died in the intensive care unit at the Clinica del Caribe. This was after he went to seek medical care due to a deteriorating urinary tract infection.

Roberto was a Colombian lawyer and also a Conservative party politician. He was first elected in 1974. He was also the longest-serving and most senior member of the Senate of Colombia.

Gerlein also held other offices. He for instance was the 42nd Governor of Atlántico.

He has also served as a Member of the Chamber of Representatives (1968–1974), and as the 10th Colombian Minister of Economic Development.

Roberto will be remembered as a force to reckon with in Congressional debates. This was particularly on matters concerning budget and resource allocation concerns along the Caribbean coast.
