Ian Carlos Gonçalves de Matos was born on 24 April 1989, Brazil. The Brazilian Olympic diver passed away on 21 December 2021.

Ian and Luiz Outerelo competed in the men’s synchronized 3-meter springboard at the 2016 Summer Olympics.  Both finished 8th out of 8 teams.

Matos will be remembered for winning three bronzes at the 2010 South American Games.

On 21 December 2021, Ian died from a lung infection, at the age of 32 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Ian had been in the hospital for more than two months before passing away. His condition however worsened this Wednesday, shortly after showing signs of improvement.

It has been revealed that Ian went to the hospital to seek out medical intention for an infection on his throat. The infection however took a turn to worse after it spread to his stomach and also his lungs.

Brazil’s Olympic Committee said in a statement: “We are profoundly saddened to have received the news of the premature death of the Olympic diver Ian Matos, aged just 32.
