Gary Brooker MBE was born on 29 May 1945(76 years old), in the  Metropolitan Borough of Hackney. He was an English singer-songwriter, pianist, and founder and lead singer of the rock band Procol Harum.

`Gary was drawn to music as a young child. He could watch his father Harry play pedal steel guitar with Felix Mendelssohn’s Hawaiian Serenaders and day in day out, his love for music grew. Brooker went on to learn how to play the piano, cornet, and trombone.

When Gary was 11 years old, his father passed away of a heart attack. His mother was forced to make ends meet and as a result, Brooker was forced to work as a paper-round boy.

He dropped out of Southend Municipal College while studying zoology and botany to take up a professional music career.

In 1962, Brooker founded The Paramounts with his guitarist friend Robin Trower. The band gave some of the best shows during the 1960’s British R&Bbreak out.

Gary and two of his best friends, Eric Clapton and Ringo Starr co-wrote one of the band’s hits, A Whiter Shade of Pale(1967).

Brooker was appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honours on 14 June 2003. This was in recognition of all his charitable services.

She was working as a Swiss au pair at the time. Three years down the line, the couple got married in July. The couple however had no children.

He passed away at his home on 19 February 2022, at the age of 76 after a long battle with cancer.
